A report by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that in a study of leading air freshener brands, the majority contained chemicals called phthalates, which can cause hormone imbalances, birth defects, and reproductive issues. None of the brands listed phthalates on their labels. The same report cites evidence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the same products, including benzene and formaldehyde, which are known to cause cancer. Research published by the National Institutes for Health also found a VOC in many air fresheners called 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB) can reduce lung function.
